Televised media is not as detrimental as popular belief would have it. The category of television encompasses a vast array of categories and topics, but holds a hidden gem that is â€Å"Educational Television† that benefits its viewers rather than harm, as critics often argue that TV does. Educational television comes in many forms that educate children. This comes in the form of shows such as, Sesame Street, Between the Lions, and much more. There is no denying that television can be a bane to viewers, but when infused and applied correctly, educational television can prove to enhance a viewer’s experience in ways that are extremely beneficial to them. Children who watch educational television are proven â€Å"more likely to be at the grade level†¦show more content†¦Educational television is virtually free, with access to a TV of course. In an article published by the New York Times, it was found that â€Å"Preschoolers in low-income areas around Kansas City who had watched educational television programming, including Sesame Street, not only were better prepared for school but performed better on verbal and math tests as late as age 7 than would have been expected otherwise†. This evidence leads to the suggestion that televised education is one of the â€Å"biggest and most affordable early childhood intervention at a cost of a few dollars per child per year, with benefits that can last several years†, as suggested by Levine and Kearney. In addition to being extremely cost effective educational television is almost always readily available, as shows on KERA PBS Kids are broadcasted from 12AM to 11:30PM, of fering educational shows all-day around the clock. Children can watch one or two shows before school starts during breakfast for an additional lesson in addition to daily school, while also being able to follow up after school anytime afterwards, as shows are broadcasted until 11:30PM, far beyond a traditional child’s bedtime for good measure. There’s no denying that it’s availability is beneficial to all children who participate in its viewings, especially to those who are less privileged.
